Request Data

The HCHS/SOL Steering Committee welcomes and encourages external investigators to collaborate with HCHS/SOL investigators and use HCHS/SOL data. Investigators interested in doing so should first contact a parent study Principal Investigator or the chair of one of our Scientific Interest Groups (SIGs) to discuss their ideas. This helps clarify feasibility and, for manuscript proposals, whether the topic has already been proposed.

New investigators can request HCHS/SOL data by:

  • Working with HCHS/SOL investigators
  • Proposing a manuscript proposal.
  • Submitting an Ancillary Study proposal.
  • Work independently using publicly available data at BIOLINCC

Steps

Identify feasibility of research questions by carefully exploring HCHS/SOL website and reading HCHS/SOL related publications. Double check there is no overlap with published or publications in progress, or with ancillary studies.

  1. Get familiarized with HCHS/SOL Publications policies and procedures
  2. Identify a parent HCHS/SOL PI (aka sponsoring PI) and share the proposal
  3. Address feedback from sponsoring PI and obtain their approval
  4. Submit proposal to the Publications Committee or Ancillary Studies Committee, as applicable
  5. Execute data use agreement between UNC and your institution
  6. Request analytic dataset(s) to your sponsoring PI
