Propose a Manuscript

HCHS/SOL welcomes manuscript proposals that use HCHS/SOL data to advance scientific knowledge, support career development and promote collaboration among investigators. The manuscript proposal process helps coordinate publications, avoid duplication of effort, and ensure that proposed analyses are feasible, scientifically appropriate, and aligned with HCHS/SOL policies.

Who Can Propose a Manuscript?

Manuscript proposals may be submitted by HCHS/SOL investigators and collaborators working with HCHS/SOL investigators. External investigators interested in using HCHS/SOL data for a manuscript must first identify and work with an HCHS/SOL sponsoring PI. Manuscripts involving data from Ancillary Studies which already ended data collection are strongly encouraged to involve their Principal Investigators while developing the manuscript proposal.

Before You Submit

  1. Identify a PI/Co-PI sponsor,
  2. Review related publications and proposals for overlap,
  3. Consider discussing and presenting the idea with a Scientific Interest Group (SIG), and
  4. Define the main aims and hypotheses, variables, and analytic approach.

What the Proposal Should Cover

  • rationale
  • how the proposal differs from related published or ongoing work
  • specific aims and hypotheses
  • methods including inclusion/exclusion, exposures, outcomes, and covariates
  • statistical analysis plan
  • table shells

Submission and Review

All manuscript proposals are submitted through the HCHS/SOL web portal which requires an account. The Publications Committee reviews proposals for scientific merit, feasibility, analytic approach, interpretation, and policy considerations. Once approved, the proposal is assigned a manuscript number that must be used for related abstracts, presentations, and the final manuscript. Part of the approval process includes the nomination of additional co-authors with appropriate expertise from throughout the HCHS/SOL network.

After Approval

After approval, the writing team may move forward with data access (data use agreement is required), analyses, and manuscript preparation. Manuscripts must remain consistent with the approved aims unless a modification or new proposal is approved.
