Welcome to the Physical Activity & Sedentary Behavior Special Interest Group (SIG)
We are excited about your interest in the HCHS/SOL Physical Activity & Sedentary Behavior Special Interest Group (SIG). Our group provides a forum for collaboration and discussion of all issues and topics related to physical activity and sedentary behavior such as: 1) Manuscript ideas; 2) Analytic and methodological challenges; 3) Presentations of findings; 4) Ancillary study proposal ideas, and 5) Article Reviews. Our SIG members come from different disciplines, including exercise physiology, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, nutrition, and others. We have members at different career stages. The HCHS/SOL Physical Activity SIG calls are held quarterly at 2:00 pm Eastern on the third Tuesday of January, April, July, and October. Members may participate in some or all meetings as their schedules allow.
To facilitate manuscript development among our SIG members, a group of investigators compiled a summary of the physical activity measures that were collected at Visits 1, 2 and 3 in the HCHS/SOL study and in physical activity-related HCHS/SOL ancillary studies. These studies include:
- HCHS/SOL - Hispanic Community Health Study / Study of Latinos
- Ancillary: SOL Youth
- Ancillary: SOL CASAS - Community and Surrounding Areas Study (San Diego only)
- Ancillary: SOL COMPASS - Cardiometabolic Outcomes in Multi-ethnic Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Study
- Ancillary: SOL PASOS - Peripheral Artery Disease Study of SOL
- Ancillary: SOL VIDA - Variations in Daily Activity
- Ancillary: SOL AIR - Environmental Factors and Diabetes Development
This summary document, which includes a description of the physical activity-related studies within HSHC/SOL, the physical activity measures and methods that were employed, and sample size information, is available here: HCHS/SOL Physical Activity Measures across V1 to V3 (PDF).
Across these studies, accelerometer data were collected for all cohort members at Visit 1 and in subsamples of cohort members at Visits 2 and 3. Different accelerometer monitors were used at Visit 3 than at Visits 1 and 2, and the Visit 3 ancillary studies (PASOS, VIDA, and Air) have provided guidance on the integration of data across visits (note that some of this guidance is still pending as of January 2026 and this documentation will be updated when more information become available - please reach out directly to the study teams for more information).
