Welcome to the Physical Activity & Sedentary Behavior Special Interest Group (SIG)
We are excited about your interest in the HCHS/SOL Physical Activity & Sedentary Behavior Special Interest Group (SIG). Our group provides a forum for collaboration and discussion of all issues and topics related to physical activity and sedentary behavior such as: 1) Manuscript ideas; 2) Analytic and methodological challenges; 3) Presentations of findings; 4) Ancillary study proposal ideas, and 5) Article Reviews. Our SIG members come from different disciplines, including exercise physiology, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, nutrition, and others. We have members at different career stages.
The HCHS/SOL Physical Activity calls are on the third Tuesday of every other month at 2:00 pm Eastern. Members may participate in some or all meetings as their schedules allow.
HCHS/SOL is a cohort study of 16,415 Hispanic/Latino adults aged 18-74 years from randomly selected households in four US cities (Chicago, Miami, Bronx, San Diego) with baseline clinic examination (2008-2011), yearly telephone follow-up assessments, and ongoing second clinic examination (2014-2017). Physical activity and sedentary behavior were assessed ONLY at HCHS/SOL baseline clinic examination (2008-20011) with (1) an accelerometer (Actical) for one week and with (2) self-reported assessment of their physical activity levels during a typical week (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, GPAQ) to obtain information about participants’ habitual activities in three domains (work, transportation, and leisure), and a question about time spent sitting or reclining on an average day. Researchers interested in HCHS/SOL Physical Activity & Sedentary Behavior are encouraged to consult the following articles:
